Notably, the AI Index expanded its oversight of worldwide AI policies, increasing its coverage from 25 countries in 2022 to a remarkable 127 in 2023.

The DOE’s 2023 AI Use Case Inventory, a public report required under a 2020 executive order, shows four times more government AI use 2022. Over 70% of cases are being operated by a single subsection of the agency, the National Energy Technology Laboratory, which is focused on environmentally sustainable energy sources.

In January 2023, the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) Task Force released its final report” Strengthening and Democratizing the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Innovation Ecosystem.” The report includes a plan for setting up a national research infrastructure that would broaden access to the resources essential to AI R&D.
